How client-side PDF processing works
Most online PDF tools work by uploading your file to a remote server, processing it there, and sending the result back to you. PDFMatic takes a different approach: the entire toolkit — merging, splitting, compression, image conversion, and OCR — is built with JavaScript and WebAssembly that runs directly inside your browser.
When you pick a file, your browser reads it into memory on your own device. All of the work happens right there, on your computer or phone, and the finished PDF is saved straight from the browser to your downloads folder. At no point does your document travel across the internet — there simply is no upload step.
You can verify this yourself: watch the network tab in your browser's developer tools while processing a file, or turn off your Wi-Fi after the page loads. The tools keep working, because nothing ever needed the network in the first place.
Client-side vs server-based PDF tools
The difference comes down to one question: does your file leave your device?
| PDFMatic (client-side) | Typical server-based tools | |
|---|---|---|
| Where files are processed | On your device, in your browser | Uploaded to a remote server |
| Upload & download wait | None — processing starts instantly | Depends on file size and connection speed |
| Who can access your file | Only you | The service, while it sits on their servers |
| Works offline | Yes, after the first visit | No — a connection is always required |
| Cost & sign-up | Free, no account needed | Often limited unless you pay or register |
Frequently asked questions
Is PDFMatic really free?
Yes. Every tool — Merge, Split, Compress, PDF to JPG, and OCR — is completely free, with no watermarks, usage limits, or account required. There is no premium tier.
Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?
No. All processing runs inside your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your files are read locally on your device and never transmitted anywhere — you can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and keep working.
Which PDF tools does PDFMatic offer?
Five tools: Merge PDF combines files into one, Split PDF extracts pages, Compress PDF reduces file size, PDF to JPG converts pages to images, and OCR PDF makes scanned documents searchable.
Does PDFMatic work offline?
Yes. After your first visit the app is cached by a service worker, so the tools keep working without an internet connection — proof that your files never depend on a server.
Do I need to install anything or create an account?
No. PDFMatic runs in any modern browser on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. There is nothing to install and no sign-up — open the page and start working.
