Compress PDF without uploading — FAQ

How does browser-based PDF compression work?

PDFMatic re-encodes the images inside your PDF — downsampling oversized ones and converting them to efficient JPEGs — then rebuilds the file with an optimized internal structure. Everything happens on your device. If your PDF is already smaller than what we can produce, we tell you honestly instead of handing back a bigger file.

Will compressing reduce the quality of my PDF?

Text, fonts, and vector graphics are never touched — they stay perfectly sharp. Images are recompressed at the level you choose: High Quality keeps them virtually indistinguishable from the original, while Extreme trades visible image detail for the smallest possible file.

Is it safe to compress confidential documents online?

Yes — your PDF is never uploaded. Compression happens locally in your browser, so sensitive files never leave your device.

The result wasn't smaller. What can I do?

Try a stronger compression level — Extreme shrinks images the most. If the file still won't budge, its images may use formats we deliberately leave untouched to avoid corrupting them. You can also keep just the pages you need with the Split PDF tool.
